Overview

Looking for an easy yet unforgettable one-day adventure from Kathmandu? Want to experience Nepal’s mountains, nature, culture, history, art, and spirituality all in one day? Your search ends here.

Sabbatical Explore Nepal presents the Dhulikhel–Namo Buddha–Panauti Hike, a fabulous one-day journey combining scenic drives, beautiful hiking trails, Himalayan views, ancient culture, and authentic local experiences.

This carefully designed day trip takes us to three remarkable destinations around the Kathmandu Valley: Dhulikhel, Namo Buddha, and Panauti.

Dhulikhel – Mountain Views and Scenic Landscapes

Our journey begins in Kathmandu with a scenic drive to Dhulikhel (1,550 m), approximately one hour away.

Dhulikhel is a popular hill station known for its beautiful landscapes and panoramic Himalayan views. On a clear day, we can enjoy magnificent views of peaks including Langtang, Lhotse, Gaurishankar, and surrounding mountain ranges.

After exploring Dhulikhel, we begin our hike towards Namo Buddha (1,750 m).

Hiking to Namo Buddha

The hike takes around 3 hours and follows a pleasant trail through green hills, terraced farmland, small villages, and peaceful countryside.

Along the way, we enjoy beautiful Himalayan scenery and experience the slower rhythm of rural Nepal. Much of the route follows quiet local trails, making this a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and village life.

Our hike brings us to Namo Buddha, one of Nepal’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites.

Namo Buddha is particularly famous for the magnificent Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery. Here, we can observe monks going about their daily activities, admire the monastery’s architecture, and experience the peaceful spiritual atmosphere.

From the monastery area, we can also enjoy impressive views across the surrounding hills and countryside.

Namo Buddha to Panauti

From Namo Buddha, we continue downhill for approximately 2.5 hours towards Panauti, a historic Newari town renowned for its temples, traditional architecture, and living cultural heritage.

The trail takes us through forests, vegetation, terraced fields, and traditional villages.

Arriving in Panauti feels like stepping into another chapter of Nepal’s history. We explore its narrow streets, ancient temples, traditional Newari houses, and distinctive architecture. The town is home to numerous historic temples and sacred sites.

We also have the opportunity to experience local food, traditional lifestyles, art, architecture, and everyday community life.

Back to Kathmandu

After exploring Panauti, we take a scenic drive of around one hour back to Kathmandu.

And just like that, one memorable day comes to an end—with mountains, hiking, culture, spirituality, local life, and beautiful memories all experienced in a single journey.
